Message from Commissioner Vana – November 2009I am happy to report that we are very close to approving an ethics ordinance that will make our governmental entities more transparent and accountable to the public. This is a big step in restoring confidence in local government and in local elected officials. We are also completing our work on the internal audit committee for the County. I am hopeful that we will have comprehensive reforms that will be supported by all. I am also encouraged that we have started the budgeting process with our first workshop that was held on October 28, 2008. I had asked for an early start to our budgeting process due to the extreme shortages we expect for the 2011 fiscal year. Our first workshop featured presentations from various departments including, Engineering, Facilities, Parks and Recreation, and Fire-Rescue. Commissioners asked in-depth questions of each and I believe we all left with a deeper understanding of the workings of these departments. We will continue this workshop on December 9, 2009. In such a critical year it is imperative that we all understand how each department works. I will be looking at possible consolidations and efficiencies. We will need to prioritize spending and make sure that we do not cut vital services. As always, I will count on constituents to keep me informed of their opinions’ regarding funding issues. I will do my best for you and look forward to your input! Happy Holidays. Shelley Vana # # #
