Community Celebrates Opening of Osprey Point Golf Course on November 6-7The weather might have been chilly, but there were lots of warm smiles at the grand opening of Osprey Point Golf Course west of Boca Raton on November 6-7. The weekend-long celebration included free golf activities and events, golf clinics, golf equipment demonstrations, and free range balls. Osprey Point Golf Course features 27 holes of championship golf with a modern rolling layout and remarkable golf hole variety. Five sets of tees on each hole accommodate players of all abilities. Recreational golfers will have a fun and enjoyable round of golf and advanced golfers can enjoy a more challenging game. “Osprey Point is about affordable golf on a great course, but it’s especially about our youth,” said County Commission Chairman Burt Aaronson. “The learning and practice facilities here are exceptional, and this golf course will serve as the home course for several of our schools. Keep your eyes on the kids who get their start at Osprey Point. They’ll be our future star athletes.” Sophomore Hayden Bottini, who plays on West Boca High School’s golf team, might be among them. “This is going to be our home course,” he said proudly as he participated in Grand Opening festivities. “We’ll play all three of the courses, and it’ll be fun showing it off to other teams. I love the game. There’s nothing like being out here.” In addition to the great layout and learning and practice facilities, the course provides considerable open space and needed wildlife habitat. In fact, golfers briefly stopped play while a peninsula cooter turtle with a shell length of 15” crossed the green in the direction of an adjacent lake. Palm Beach County made a significant number of additional environmental enhancements to the design, construction, and management plans at Osprey Point, and the facility is registered with Audubon International. Osprey Point has completed the final requirements of the Audubon International Classic Program and awaits an on-site environmental review for certification. When certified, Osprey Point will be the first in the State of Florida and the second in the US to be certified as a Classic Sanctuary. Palm Beach County also worked cooperatively with the neighboring wildlife refuge to integrate wildlife conservation and habitat restoration and enhancement into the design of Osprey Point. “The Service commends the County for its efforts to implement sustainable resource management practices, and we appreciate the opportunity to make recommendations on the management plan for Osprey Point,” stated an official representing the US Department of the Interior. “The course is beautiful. It’s elegant,” commented a local golfer enjoying his first round at Osprey Point. “You discover new things every time you turn a corner. It’s just amazing.”
