BCC Briefs

At the December 5, 2006 Board of County Commissioners meeting, the board took the following action:

Water Utilities – approved a request by Lion Country Safari to have PBC Water Utilities assume maintenance and operation of the theme park’s wastewater treatment plant at a cost of $15,000 for the first year; accepted closing documents related to the purchase earlier this year of the Royal Palm Beach utility system.

Youth Violence Prevention – approved interlocal agreements with West Palm Beach, Lake Worth and Riviera Beach to establish Youth Violence Prevention programs in the cities’ target areas; approved budget transfers of $661,125 (West Palm Beach), $168,677 (Lake Worth) and $656,638 (Riviera Beach). The cities have committed $1 million, $122,500 and $582,616, respectively.

Homeless Advisory Board – approved establishment of a Homeless Advisory Board to help draft a 10-year plan to eliminate homelessness and address related affordable housing issues; approved a contract in the amount of $88,000 with Langton Associates to help analyze issues and assist the advisory board.

Single-Family Housing Assistance – conceptually approved four awards totaling $2 million to developers of the following residential projects: Amelia Estates, 30 units, $800,000; Brooks Subdivision, five very-low and 13 low to moderate-income units, $700,000; Village Centre 10 low and 20 moderate-income units, $400,000; La Perla, 28 low and 20 moderate-income units, $100,000.

Northlake Boulevard – voted to seek eminent domain rather pay a $1.5-million asking price for a 10-acre parcel needed for the widening of Northlake Boulevard.

Old Indiantown Road – postponed designating a 194-foot segment of Old Indiantown Road as historic to resolve a disagreement with the owner, Tree Brothers, Ltd. The road is part of a 17-acre tract the owner is seeking to convert to an RV park.

Fire-Rescue – agreed to purchase 2.67 acres of land for $380,000 at the corner of Indiantown and Mack Dairy roads for a new fire station to serve Jupiter Farms.

Solid Waste Authority – sitting as the Solid Waste Authority governing board, appointed Commissioner Jeff Koons as chair, Commissioner Karen Marcus as vice chair, and Commissioner Burt Aaronson as secretary.
