A conference titled Family Violence: Intervention and Prevention Strategies in a Diverse Society will be held at the Palm Beach County Convention Center on December 13, 2006 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The conference is being presented jointly by the Palm Beach County Division of Youth Affairs and The Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention and Treatment.
Highlights of the conference include plenary sessions, panel discussions and question-and-answer periods, descriptions of culturally sensitive interventions and prevention programs as well as detailed handout materials. Attendees of the conference will include educators, guidance counselors, psychologists, social workers, mental health workers, marriage and family therapists, social agency personnel, judges, police personnel, pediatricians, family physicians and psychiatrists.
Upon completion of this conference, participants should be able to screen and assess for family violence in victims and their family members, conduct both prevention and treatment programs in an ethnically sensitive manner and develop culturally competent curricula for victims of family violence and implement multifaceted psychotherapeutic, school or community based interventions.
Presenters will include Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Waterloo, Ontario; Fernando Mederos, Ed.D., co-author of Programs for Men Who Batter: Intervention and Prevention Strategies in a Diverse Society; Diane Kelly, Ph.D., Chief of Clinical Services, Education and Training for the Palm Beach County Youth Affairs Division and Etiony Aldarondo, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Educational and Psychological Studies at the University of Miami. The Keynote Address will be by State Attorney Barry Krischer J.D.
Youth Affairs Division, Palm Beach County, is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists, and to provide continuing education to LCSWs, LMFTs, and LMHCs by the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling (Provider # BAP-494, expires March 31, 2007). Youth Affairs Division, Palm Beach County, maintains responsibility for the program and its content. This continuing education activity has been approved for 6.0 hours of Continuing Psychological Education credit.
