Commissioner Bob Kanjian will hold a town hall meeting this evning, Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007 at 6 p.m. in the Clayton E. Hutcheson Agricultural Center, 559 North Military Trail in West Palm Beach. (The Center is west of the Palm Beach International Airport behind the Florida Drivers License Office.) Officials of County Animal Care & Control and Public Safety and veterinary associations will also attend the town hall meeting.
The County is drafting an ordinance prescribing mandatory spay and neutering of pets as a proposed solution to the pet overpopulation issue which results in the euthanasia of thousands of unwanted cats and dogs annually. Under present planning, if pet owners desired to keep their pets intact, they would be required to pay an additional fee. The Board of County Commissioners is scheduled to address the animal care and control issues at its meeting on January 15, 2008.
The meeting will open with a formal debate format. Two speakers will address the issue from favoring and opposing viewpoints for 15 minutes each. Five minutes will be allotted to each speaker for a rebuttal. The two representatives of the veterinary associations will have five minutes each to address this issue. The County’s Channel 20 will provide an audio feed.
