Palm Tran, Palm Beach County’s public transportation system, has officially broken ground on a new intermodal facility in downtown West Palm Beach adjacent to the historic Seaboard train station. The location was chosen due to its proximity to the existing Tri-Rail station.
The intermodal facility will have room for up to 18 buses at one time. There will also be commuter restroom facilities, kiss-n-ride accommodations (passenger drop-off area), dedicated space for vendors, and a modern and comfortable waiting area for passengers.
The facility will improve transfers from Palm Tran to Tri-Rail, and connect commuters with Amtrak trains, Greyhound buses and the free trolley service operated by the City of West Palm Beach. The facility will be served by nine existing Palm Tran routes that travel throughout the central business district.
Construction is scheduled to be completed by spring 2009. Funding for construction is being provided by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). The project will bring additional jobs into Palm Beach County.
Palm Tran officials believe this new facility will serve to increase ridership for both Palm Tran and Tri-Rail, as it will make using public transit more convenient and comfortable.
