On November 21, Shaun Donovan, secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that Palm Beach County will receive $1.98 million from the Sustainable Communities Regional Planning and Community Challenge competitive grant program for the creation of a Glades Region Master Plan.
Palm Beach County was one of only 27 grants awarded nationwide and was given the entire amount requested in its application.
The Board of County Commissioners, through its Economic Development Office (EDO), requested the funds to develop a master plan for the entirety of the Glades region, which includes the cities of Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay and other unincorporated areas within the Lake Region.
The plan will serve to enhance economic competitiveness, infrastructure sustainability, transportation choices, workforce training, and housing in close proximity to employment centers. Incorporating principles of livability and sustainability, the comprehensive planning process will include input and participation from affected communities, policy coordination and investment leveraging.
The grant will be administered by EDO utilizing the resources of five county departments, along with the Glades tri-cities, the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council, and community-based organizations.
