At the June 5, 2007 Board of County Commissioners meeting, the board took the following action: Jupiter bridge – approved a resolution naming a portion of the U.S. 1 bridge over the Loxahatchee River in Jupiter after former Jupiter Mayor Carlin White. PBIA parking – approved a change order to a $61.7-million contract with James A. Cummings, Inc. for construction of a new long-term parking garage at Palm Beach International Airport, enabling the County save approximately $1.4 million in sales taxes. Dune restoration – approved a 50-year agreement with Condado, Inc. for construction access to sand dunes on Singer Island. Atlantic Avenue – accepted a state matching grant in the amount of $6.3 million from the Transportation Regional Incentive Program to expand Atlantic Avenue west of Lyons Road to four lanes. The County expects to collect an additional $23 million from developers toward road construction in the area. Child Care Advisory Council – agreed to ask the BCC advisory panel to review a County policy that limits to five the number of children allowed in an in-home day care. State rules allow up to 10 children. Homestead Exemptions – called on the Property Appraiser’s Office to step up efforts to catch residents who illegally file homestead exemptions. Since 2004, PBC investigators have reportedly recovered less than $325,000 in lost tax revenue, fines and interest from homestead cheaters compared with approximately $9.5 million for Broward County. |
