McCarty's Proposed Budget Cuts
The following is my proposed budget plan presented at the Board of County Commissioners' workshop on June 11.
- All departments and programs funded by property taxes get cut by the percentage dictated by the legislature
- No new programs added this year
- Don’t fill any job vacancies
- No layoffs of personnel in police or fire. Percentage decreases should come from cuts in salary increases and benefits. (The Sheriff is proposing a 16% increase in salaries and benefits for his department).
- We do not pay for the $33 million in unfunded mandates. If the legislature does not penalize us, we will pass that additional savings onto the taxpayers.
The percentage of cuts should reflect both parts of the state’s plan (legislative and constitutional amendment) which will be determined in the upcoming special session. Therefore, when the voters vote in January, they will have a realistic idea of what the impact will be.
