Summer is nearly half over. I hope you are all staying cool as we wait for September to bring us more comfortable weather. I want to take a moment to update you on a few issues.
The Morikami Museum is holding its annual Bon Festival on Saturday, August 11th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The highlight of the Festival occurs at sunset when Morikami Pond is transformed into a tranquil sea of lighted lanterns followed by a spectacular fireworks finale. The event will also feature Japanese taiko drum performances, traditional Japanese folk dancing, a Japanese street fair, games and shop stalls. Refreshments are available and you are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Admission is $10 for adults (18 and over), $5.00 for children (7-17) and free for museum members and children under 6. No special senior discounts are available. Parking is free. As a frequent visitor to the Morikami, I can assure you that you will spend an enjoyable evening at one of the County's most beautiful locations.

The Palm Beach County Library System has recently added a new electronic database of antique and collectible pricing called Price It! Antiques & Collectibles. This resource is the most comprehensive antique and collectible pricing tool in the world, and you can access it from home with your home computer and your library card. Price It! gathers sales information from online auctions like eBay, as well as online retail outlets and dozens of land-based auctions for a truly comprehensive view of the antique and collectible marketplace. The County Library website is: www.pbclibrary.org. Click on the flowered pitcher for your opportunity to evaluate your treasures. You must have a County library card to access this new system.
Finally, I want to share some surprising statistics that I was recently given by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. From 1997-2006, there were 522 drowning deaths in Palm Beach County. Of those, 29% were individuals aged 55 and over. Most of these deaths occurred in pools (22%) followed by cars in canals (20%). Fire Rescue's Drowning Prevention Coalition Manager Anna Stewart wants you to know that she is available to conduct water safety presentations to Homeowner's Associations and other community organizations. Her presentations are age-based and focus on ways to keep you safe in the event of a water-related incident. To find out more about these presentations or to obtain a brochure, please call my office and my staff will be happy to assist you.
