Preparing Pets for Hurricanes

For Immediate Release: August 16, 2007
Contact: Karen Buchan, 561-233-1280

The Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control Division encourages all pet owners to prepare dogs and cats for upcoming hurricanes. Palm Beach County residents and their pets living in evacuation zones or in mobile homes can pre-register to stay together at the Pet Friendly Shelter.

It is important that pet owners pack a bag for their dogs and cats to take with them if they leave the area or go to the Pet Friendly Shelter. All pets at the Pet Friendly Shelter should have a spacious carrier or kennel, food and water for five days, medicines, toys and blankets. The owner should assure that their dog or cat has been currently vaccinated against rabies and other diseases and is wearing a rabies tag.

For more information about the Pet Friendly Shelter and preparing pets for a hurricane, visit www.pbcgov.com/pubsafety/animal or call 561-233-1266.
