Congressmen Host Homeowner Insurance Forum

Commissioner Jeff Koons welcomed Florida Congressmen Ron Klein, Robert Wexler and Tim Mahoney to the County Commission chambers on August 30 for a public forum on homeowner insurance. Also attending were representatives from the Office of the Insurance Commissioner, bankers and mortgage brokers, builders and real estate professionals.

The three members of the U.S. House of Representatives are proposing a bill to establish a national catastrophic disaster fund that could help reduce the cost of insurance premiums in Florida. Participation would be voluntary, on a state-by-state basis. Financed through the sale of low-cost bonds to private investors, the national fund would pool monies from federal and state governments to cover extraordinary claims when a major natural disaster hits.
