At the September 11, 2007 Board of County Commissioners meeting, the following action was taken:

Biotechnology – conceptually endorsed a $190-million incentive package to bring Germany’s largest research institution, the Max Planck Society, to North County. Commissioners tentatively agreed to provide $87 million in County funding for construction of a 100,000-square-foot bio-imaging center at Florida Atlantic University’s Jupiter campus. FAU is donating six acres of land adjacent to the Scripps Florida site. The County is seeking an additional $95 million in matching funds from the state.

Roads – adopted a series of amendments to the five-year road program; approved the alignment of the extension of Park Avenue from Congress Avenue to Old Dixie Highway in Lake Park.

Land Purchase – approved the acquisition of 230 acres of land located south of Indiantown Road and east of Jupiter Farms Road for approximately $19.8 million. Portions of the tract will be used for water resources, maintained as a natural area, and incorporated into neighboring Riverbend Park.

Broward Annexation – approved an interlocal agreement to transfer approximately 2,000 acres of undeveloped land known as “The Wedge” south of the Hillsboro Canal to Broward County for $331,000.

Charter Amendment – approved placing on the November 2008 ballot a proposed charter amendment that revises how and where future charter amendments will be implemented. If passed, any approved countywide charter amendment would be effective in a municipality only if a majority of voters in that municipality voted in favor of it.

Nonpartisan Elections – agreed to discuss at the October 25 meeting whether to place on the ballot a referendum that would make elections for commissioners, the tax collector, and the clerk and comptroller nonpartisan.

Small Business Assistance – approved a one-year contract in the amount of $94,000 with FAU’s Small Business Development Center to provide technical assistance and training to qualified small business enterprise firms; approved a one-year grant agreement in the amount of $96,800 with the Palm Beach County Resource Center to provide funding for activities and services to develop and assist small businesses in Palm Beach County.

Caron Foundation – postponed a request by the Caron Foundation of Florida for the issuance of up to $9.5 million in tax-exempt revenue bonds.

Budget Oversight – agreed to disband the Budget Advisory Committee.
