WHAT: Commissioner Bob Kanjian will hold a news conference to update the public on a new drowning prevention education campaign as well as a new legislative initiative intended to minimize the dangers of drowning in pools and spas. He will discuss the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act, H.R. 1721, which establishes grants for states to enact laws adhering to safety guidelines in this new federal law. Specifically, the Act addresses suction entrapment prevention from pool and spa drains. A new drain cover intended to prevent suction entrapment will be displayed.
WHO: Scott Garber, 17, the son of a County firefighter, will relate his near-death experience of 12 years ago as a suction entrapment victim. Another survivor, Brendan Chernin, who had a near-death suction incident with a hot tub drain and Mischa Tuttle, whose daughter, Jaylyn Frances Vanover, died in a pool drowning two years ago, will also be present.
