Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department and the
Drowning Prevention Coalition of Palm Beach County are teaming up to
present at the ASchools and Pools@ program for kindergarten and first
grade students at Pioneer Park Elementary School in Belle
Glade. The free swimming lessons are offered during school hours.
According to the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office, eight percent of all drowning incidents that occur in Palm Beach County take place in the Glades area.
With drowning being the second-leading cause of unintentional
injury for children ages 1 to14, the Drowning Prevention Coalition has
taken a proactive approach to preventing water-related injuries by
implementing a ASchools and Pools@ program. Over a four-week time
period, approximately 130 kindergarten and first-graders will receive
between 6 and 8 swimming lessons that last 35 minutes each. Upon
successful completion of their swimming lessons, Principal Peggy Back
Nelson will host an ice cream/cake party where each student will receive
a special certificate of participation.
