Why is the pool being closed and drained?
Approximately two years ago the Federal Government passed the Virginia Graeme Baker Anti-Entrapment Act (VGB) for swimming pools. The County’s swimming pools are safe from entrapment by design but we are still required to replace the drain grates in all pools and retrofit the sumps, if needed, to come into compliance with this act.

We have waited as long as we can to come into compliance in order to close the pools at a time that would be least detrimental to our programs. The pools will have to be drained completely for this work. Arrangements have been made for large pumps to drain the pools as quickly as possible and for the use of nearby fire hydrants to fill them quickly. Over all we expect each pool to be down for approximately ten days. If any unforeseen problems arise during the installation the time may have to be increased. If work goes as expected the time may be shorter.
