Sections Within Recreation Services

 

Recreation Services Division

Mission
The employees of the Recreation Services Division are dedicated to complementing the unique recreational interests of people through relationships, services, and venues, inspiring passionate, playful, and meaningful lives.

The Recreation Services Division provides diverse opportunities for job-seekers within our 11 sections. Scroll down to view each of our sections and the variety of responsibilities within each. 

Amphitheater
The Amphitheater Section creates, produces, and directs concerts, variety shows, and plays on the amphitheater stages. We also work with non profit and for profit groups assisting them in renting the facility for their projects. As a member of the Amphitheater Section your responsibilities may include:

  • Creating events and shows for programming at the venue
  • Creating budgets for programming
  • Contacting non profit and for profit companies to sell the amphitheater as a rental facility
  • Assisting non profits and for profits with new and exciting events to put on
  • Working with public and private corporations to create sponsorship opportunities
  • Working with media outlets to create sponsorship in kind opportunities
  • Creating advertising such as posters and newspaper ads for upcoming events

Athletics
The Athletics Section is responsible for the facilitation of more than 50 softball, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, basketball, football, and tennis leagues. Staff members accommodate the needs of more than 85 individual sport providers and assist the Palm Beach County School District with athletic field space. As a member of the Athletics Section your responsibilities may include:

  • Working as a liaison and educator between sport providers and the department
  • Reviewing, revising and implementing athletic rules and regulations based on current trends and national standards
  • Monitoring and evaluating the operations of adult and youth sport providers
  • Organizing tournaments and athletic special events
  • Working as a liaison and educator between youth, sport providers and the department

Customer Service
As a member of the Customer Service Section, you will provide quality services based on the needs of the community. As a member of the section your responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting the public to locate available picnic pavilions
  • Answering questions about the Department’s facilities and services
  • Collecting fees and learning basic accounting principles
  • Processing picnic reservations and issuing permits
  • Answering telephones and serving walk-in customers in a fast passed office setting

Employee and Volunteer Development
The Employee and Volunteer Development Section provides support to the employees and volunteers of the Parks and Recreation Department.  As a staff member of this section, your responsibilities may include:

  • Department Recognition – coordinate, plan, implement, and evaluate recognition events and programs for over 700 employees
  • Department Orientation – coordinate, plan, and implement new employee orientation
  • Staff training and professional development opportunities for department staff 
  • Coordinate Division Task Forces working toward completion of the Division Strategic Plan
  • Overall coordination of Department Volunteer Management program

Equestrian Center
As a member of the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center staff, you will provide quality services to youth and adults based on the needs of the community. As a member of the section, your responsibilities may include:

  • Event management
  • Facility management and maintenance
  • Meeting with user groups and interested equine organizations
  • Learning the concepts of risk management for specialized facilities and events
  • Reviewing and researching policies and procedures
  • Maintaining an equestrian facility (rings, barns, stalls, etc.)

Nature Centers
Daggerwing Nature Center, Green Cay Nature Center, Okeeheelee Nature Center
The Nature Centers provide quality environmental educational opportunities to youth and adults based on the needs of the community. Duties will vary by location; however, as a member of the staff, your responsibilities may include:

  • Developing and implementing environmental education programs for all age ranges
  • Developing and implementing curriculum based programming for school groups
  • Caring for and handling live exhibit animals
  • Developing and implementing interpretive exhibits
  • Assisting in the day to day operations and maintenance of the center and grounds
  • Coordinating or working with volunteer staff
  • Coordinating or working with summer camp programs
  • Writing and developing media releases, articles, brochures, etc. for distribution to the public

Out of School Programs
The Out of School Programs Section facilitates a unique partnership between the Parks and Recreation Department and the School District of Palm Beach County by providing funding and technical assistance to the School District Middle School After-school programs. Staff responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating, planning, implementing, and evaluating county wide special events for middle schools
  • Recruitment and selection of prospective Recreation Consultants to work in Middle School After-school Programs
  • Assisting with after school and summer camp program development, training and implementation
  • Facilitating partnerships with non-profit agencies, schools, and the business sector
  • Developing program modules for youth ages 5 to 14
  • Evaluating quality standards of after-school program components
  • Assisting with the development and facilitation of various workshops for out of school providers

Recreation Centers
West Jupiter Recreation Center, Westgate Recreation Center, West Boynton Park and Recreation Center
The staff at the Recreation Centers provides recreation and leisure activities and programs for children, teen, adults, and seniors. Additionally, the staff facilitates indirect program opportunities by contracting with individuals or volunteer organizations. Responsibilities will vary by location; however, as a member of the staff, your responsibilities may include:

  • Creating, planning, implementing, and evaluating recreation programs and special events that reflect the needs of the surrounding community
  • Ensuring safe and fun environments for participation in programs and activities
  • Providing excellent customer service
  • Attending meetings related to the operations and management of the park and center facilities
  • Implementing and managing multi-level program marketing plans
  • Facility maintenance and supervision
  • Budget preparation and management

Special Events
As a member of the Special Events Section, you will provide quality event management services based on the needs of the community. As a member of the section, your responsibilities may include:

  • Meeting with user groups
  • Event management
  • Coordinating inter-departmental services for the implementation of quality events
  • Determining event fees and implementing accounting practices
  • Learning concepts of risk management
  • Reviewing and implementing policies and procedures

Summer Camp
The Summer Camp section offers day camps for ages 6 to 15 for eight weeks at three primary locations, West Jupiter, Westgate, and West Boynton Recreation Centers. Approximately 50 counselor and assistant director positions are filled each summer. Summer camp staff is responsible for:

  • Supervising groups of 12 to 14 campers on-site and on field trips
  • Planning and leading campers in games, crafts, sports, and special events
  • Ensuring that safety and fun are present every day of camp

Therapeutic Recreation
As a member of the Therapeutic Recreation Section, you will provide quality programming to youth and adults with disabilities based on the needs of the community. As a member of the section, your responsibilities may include:

  • Planning, organizing and implementing social and sport programs for people with varying abilities
  • Exposure to managing a gymnasium, pool, and art center
  • Exposure to the managing non-profit organizations
  • Learning fund-raising and event planning skills
  • Attending steering committee meetings and meeting with user groups
  • Planning, organizing and implementing special events
  • Learning governmental budgeting systems and strategies
  • Learning concepts of program and facility safety
  • Reviewing and implementing policies and procedures
