2014 WINTER JUNIOR NATURALIST SERIES
Ages 9-14, $10/each class, $50/all six classes (Reservations required)
The Junior Naturalist Series is designed for youth who are interested in nature and outdoor activities. The goal of the program is to actively put youth in touch with nature and teach them about the Green Cay Wetlands and South Florida wildlife. This is a great way to learn about nature and have fun meeting new people at the Green Cay Nature Center. You can attend all 6 sessions or just one session of your choosing. Each session will include an informative presentation and hands on activities in the lab and outside on the boardwalk and natural area. Snacks will be provided but please pack a lunch if staying for both morning and afternoon sessions. Please call for more detailed information. (561-966-7000)
- Junior Ornithologist
- December 29, 8:30-11:30 a.m.
- Learn to identify birds, learn phonetic bid calls, learn about bill design.
- Junior Herpetologist
- December 29, 12-3 p.m.
- Learn about reptiles and amphibians, learn how to handle reptiles, check tree frog research poles.
- Junior Botanist
- December 30, 8:30-11:30 a.m.
- Learn about local plants, learn about seeds, go on the boardwalk to study plants.
- Junior Survivalist
- December 30, 12-3 p.m.
- Learn how to navigate, learn how to evaluate your habitat, learn uses for plants.
- Junior Wetland Ecologist
- December 31, 8:30-11:30 a.m.
- Learn about water pollution, learn about wetland plants and animals, learn about the importance of wetlands.
- Junior Entomologist
- December 31, 12-3 p.m.
- Learn about insects, collect insects, ID and mount your insects.
SCIENCE FOR SENIORS: Sea Turtle Struggles
Wednesday, December 3rd at 1:00pm (Reservations Required)
Ages 50 and up – $5 per person
Learn about the struggles that sea turtles face throughout their lifetime, starting with the incredible journey hatching from their nests all the way to adulthood and the perils they face with fishing line, boat strikes, and more. Presentation will be given by a Marine Turtle Specialist from Gumbo Limbo Nature Center and will include a hands-on interactive stranding response simulation.

SCIENCE FOR SENIORS: Marine Conservation
Wednesday, December 17th at 1:00pm (Reservations Required)
Ages 50 and up – $5 per person
You probably know that our pollution can end up in the ocean and affect the health of fish, but did you know that the health of the economy can affect the hearing of dolphins? How about using electricity to revive coral reefs? Learn about the many issues plaguing the health of our oceans, and the steps that are being taken to conserve them in this talk with a researcher with the Marine Mammal Conservancy and participate in hands-on demonstrations about conservation.

Join a naturalist on a night-time boardwalk tour looking at nature from the point of view of its nocturnal residents.

Kids will discover nature through crafts and stories about animals and other nature-related themes!
