Volunteer Opportunities

Would you like to help make the world a better place?  Help Okeeheelee Nature Center educate visitors about animals and the environment, and inspire people to take action to help our planet!

Volunteers must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be at least fifteen years old.
  • You must not need court-ordered service hours.
  • You must commit to volunteering for a minimum of six months.
  • You must complete the application/background check process.

Training is provided by staff or experienced volunteers for all positions.  Volunteer opportunities include:

EDUCATION DOCENT - Help lead nature walks for school groups or weekend public tours. Flexible weekly shifts.

GREETER – Welcome visitors to the nature center, answer questions, answer phones, make gift shop sales. Weekly shifts.

HABITAT MANAGEMENT ASSISTANT - Remove unwanted plants, maintain nest boxes, clear trails, pruning garden plants, manage fire-ants.  Tools/Equipment provided.  Flexible shifts available.

ANIMAL CARETAKER – Clean animal enclosures and food/water dishes, prepare animal diets. Weekly shifts.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT - Collect data on Gopher Tortoises, compile species lists.  Flexible shifts.
