The Sixth Annual VSA arts of Florida - Palm Beach County exhibition, "Elements of Art" opens to the public from July 31 to August 21 at the Lighthouse Center for the Arts in Tequesta. Join us for an opening reception on Wednesday, July 31st from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m, featuring a full color retrospective of VSA arts classes conducted from the summer of 2001 to the spring of 2002. The exhibit displays tile mosaics, ink paintings, cartoons and painted furniture created by 27 talented student artists. Lighthouse Center for the Arts is located at Gallery Square North, 373 Tequesta Drive in Tequesta.
Meet the artists, applaud their accomplishments, relax and enjoy an evening celebrating creativity and fun! Students from the VSA arts Clowning ArtStops class taught by Glass Productions will perform and entertain all. Artists Christopher Torres and Debbie Schmees will demonstrate their drawing and painting techniques respectively. Chris, an adult with autism, has been drawing since he was four. Debbie, an adult with a learning disability, enjoys painting in the impressionistic style and has won several awards for her work.
Katie Gardner, a twelve year old from Jupiter Middle School, shows off her most recent work "The Dragon" created in the Sumi-e ink painting class taught by Susan Wilders at the Morikami Museum. Katie has Spinal Muscular Atrophy and has been using an electric wheelchair since she was two years old. Her first experience with VSA arts was as the winner of the Holiday Card Contest in 2000. Ms. Gardner participated in her first furniture painting class through VSA arts taught by artist, Gail Ganzlin. Katie states, "I love to draw and paint, I’m looking forward to taking the watercolor painting class."
VSA arts of Florida - Palm Beach County promotes arts, education and creative expression in more than 1,800 children and adults with disabilities, thereby strengthening their human spirit and improving their quality of life.
