Athletes, Musicians, Graduates Benefit from County Recreation Funding

District 6 Commissioner Tony Masilotti has announced a series of Recreation Assistance Program (RAP) funding awards aimed at improving youth sports, school activities and civic programs in his District. "I'm always willing to listen when parents, teachers or coaches come to me asking for help," said Commissioner Masilotti.
The Commissioner provided $10,000 in discretionary funds for Project Graduation celebrations at four District 6 high schools -- $2,500 each for Royal Palm Beach, Wellington, Pahokee and Glades Central. Project Graduation is an all-night, drug-free, alcohol-free party for graduating seniors held on the school campus following commencement exercises. The monies helped pay for entertainment, food, games and activities. Countywide, the Board of County Commissioners contributed a total of $40,000 this year to Project Graduation.
The Royal Palm Beach Band Booster Club received $5,000 to pay for new musical instruments, accessories, sheet music and a consultant's fee for a youth summer band director. The new instruments include a xylophone, cymbals and orchestra bells. The Band Booster Club's community outreach program serves school-age children and their parents who perform in a family-oriented concert band. The all-volunteer Royal Palm Beach Community Band performs free concerts throughout the year.
Members of the boys and girls Wellington Youth Travel Basketball program have new uniforms, thanks to a $2,000 RAP contribution. Each team received $1,000 to help pay for shirts and shorts, equipment and tournament entry fees.
Lastly, young baseball players at Acreage Community Park are sharpening their hitting skills, and fans will be better able to hear what's going on during the games. A $10,000 contribution paid for a new batting cage, four scorers' tables and a new public address system at the athletic facility on 140th Avenue.
"This is one of our busiest County parks," said Commissioner Masilotti. "We have a major expansion underway, but it's a couple of years out. So in the meantime, we need to get the most we can out of the existing facilities."
