Commissioners and staff members took time out Tuesday to say thanks to
State Senator Ken Pruitt for his help in securing state funding for
the Lake Worth Lagoon Initiative. "Senator Pruitt has stepped up to
help get us these monies that go toward many, many critical projects,"
said Chairman Warren Newell. One project is the downtown West Palm
Beach drainage recycling system that captures urban runoff and
redistributes it as purified drinking water. Pictured (l-r) are ERM

Details: The
Florida Legislature has approved an additional $2.5 million in the State
budget for SFY 2002-2003 targeted for improvements to Lake Worth Lagoon.
This brings the total for
State-approved funding for the Lake Worth Lagoon Partnership Grant Program
to $9,500,000 since the program’s inception in 1998.
This pass-through grant program, from the State to Palm Beach County to
local sponsors, funds construction projects that will benefit the water
quality and habitat in the Lagoon. Ten of the twenty six projects under
contract are complete or nearly complete, with the remaining projects in
various stages of implementation. Local sponsors must provide at least 50%
of the total project cost in order to receive funding. The approximate total
project cost for all projects funded thus far exceeds $27,000,000 which
exceeds the 50% match requirement.
