County Supports Cultural Diversity
Program
Students in Riviera Beach will have an opportunity to attend plays, concerts
and other cultural activities, thanks to a recreation assistance program
(RAP) contribution by Commissioner Addie Greene. She provided $20,000 from
her District 7 discretionary fund for the Cultural Diversity Program at the
Mount Olive Community Outreach Center in Riviera Beach.
The program introduces school-age youngsters to cultural arts and live
performances at venues such as the Kravis Center, the Duncan Theater, the
Jenkins House and local public libraries.
“Many of these youngsters would never have the chance to see a live show or
visit a museum or art gallery, if it weren’t for the Cultural Diversity
Program,” said Commissioner Greene. “It has been hugely successful in Delray
Beach, and I am very happy to assist them in starting one in North County.”
The Mount Olive Community Outreach Center provides tutoring classes in math,
algebra and science that help prepare students for FCAT and SAT tests. Group
tours of college campus are arranged for high school seniors to help them
with the selection process. There are also youth athletic programs such as
softball, basketball, tennis and track. Activities are held at various
locations, including the Wells Recreation Center, the Dan Calloway Complex
and Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. The Outreach Center serves some
5,000 students from diverse ethnic groups in and around Riviera Beach,
including those attending Mary McCloud, Bethune, West Riviera, Lincoln and
Washington elementary schools, JFK Middle School and Suncoast High School.
