2002 Labor Day Classic Golf Tournament

            Palm Beach County’s Okeeheelee Public Golf Course will host a Media Preview on Saturday, August 17 to announce plans for the 2nd Annual Labor Day Classic Golf Tournament to benefit the Okeeheelee Junior Golf Foundation (OJGF).

            The Media Preview will coincide with a Junior Golf Tournament also slated for August 17, part of the OJGF’s tournament program designed to provide young golfers with the experience needed to move on to state and national junior golf tours. The Junior Golf Tournament will include approximately 175 competitors —both boys and girls— between 4 and 18 years of age.

            The Okeeheelee Junior Golf Foundation’s mission is to provide children of all backgrounds with the opportunity to learn and play the game of golf. Since the organization’s inception in 1996, junior golf participation has exceeded 25,000. “This program teaches kids so much,” says OJGF’s PGA Professional Bobby Brown. “Not only does it introduce them to a healthy, life-long leisure pastime and create lasting friendships, it develops their ability to plan and make independent decisions, teaches them self-discipline and gives them positive self-esteem. The game builds character.”

            The OJGF’s Junior Golf program is structured to provide great fun and learning experiences for all ability levels—a golf learning program for every interested junior golfer. It incorporates instruction and five levels of play:

Level 1. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . a monthly, 4-week program —assists beginning, intermediate and advanced juniors develop, fine tune, and understand the skills of the golf swing and short game.

Level 2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . an 8-week course for beginning and intermediate juniors—opportunity to apply developmental skills on the golf course; includes the strategies of playing, basic rules and proper etiquette.

Level 3. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Intermediate Junior League

Level 4. . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . Advanced Junior League

Level 5. . . . . . . . . . Okeeheelee Junior Golf Foundation —Junior Golf Tournaments

             Although the fees to participate in the Okeeleehee Junior Golf program are reasonable, scholarship programs are available for junior golfers unable to afford the cost. The OJGF will pay their fees and provide a set of golf clubs.

            Junior golfers are also eligible to apply for OJGF college scholarships for academic achievement. In awarding its college scholarships, OJGF considers community service, as well as academic achievement. Junior golfers are strongly encouraged to “give back to the game” through a mentoring program—promoting golf to younger kids.

            Okeeheelee Golf Course is located approximately one mile west of Jog Road off Forest Hill Boulevard in Okeeheelee Park at 1200 Country Club Way in West Palm Beach.
