Data collected by Palm Beach County's aerial mapping project using Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) technologies is being used by FEMA to improve the accuracy of new Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) currently being prepared for the entire County. This technology provides a very accurate method for determining terrain elevations and will improve the definition of County Special Flood Hazard Areas. In addition to the County's LIDAR data, the county was able to obtain LIDAR data from the US Army Corp of Engineers for other areas throughout the county. It is anticipated the county will receive new preliminary FIRMs for the entire county in September or October of 2005. The new maps will be made available for review and comment at a special public meeting prior to their acceptance and implementation. The final approved FIRMs should be received late in the first quarter of 2006. These improved future Flood Insurance Rate Maps and Coastal Surge Maps will help to ensure you receive fair rates on your flood insurance. |
