While some areas of the county may claim immunity from flooding based on recent history and published elevations, virtually the whole county has proven to be susceptible to short term localized flooding when extraordinary rain events have exceeded the capacity of natural runoff and absorption. A review of recent flood events suggests that Palm Beach County likely surpasses the national average of 25% of flooding occurring outside NFIP designated Special Flood Hazard Areas. Even a significant number of county properties carried on NFIP's "repetitive flood loss list" lie outside these Special Flood Hazard Areas. For a more detailed description of Palm Beach County's flood hazard, refer to the Palm Beach County Unified Local Mitigation Strategy. |
