This was the first of several public workshops requested by the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) to present the history and evolution of the guiding principles, objectives and policies in the Comprehensive Plan. This first workshop consisted of an overview of the history, achievement of goals and continued economic importance of the Agricultural Reserve and provided context for discussion on policy issues and decisions regarding existing and future land uses in the Agricultural Reserve.
Secondly, this workshop was prepared to provide context to the review of upcoming Comprehensive Plan text and site-specific amendments scheduled for public hearings within the next couple of months.
At the workshop, the BCC stated a firm support to agriculture in the County and recognized the strategic importance of the Agricultural Reserve in the economic base of Palm Beach County. Therefore, the BCC agreed to afford more flexibility to the regulations governing agricultural related uses, such as farmers markets, produce stands and packing plants. To that end, an expanded Land Development Regulation Advisory Board (LDRAB) Sub-Committee will be reconvened to address changes to the Code. The Board also directed staff to convene a group of agricultural industry representatives, as well as other stakeholders, to support agriculture through the formulation of an economic agricultural policy or other initiatives to maintain and expand agriculture in Palm Beach County.
