Frequently Asked Questions about Business Services

By act of the Florida Legislator Occupational Licenses are now called Business Tax Receipts

Who is required to obtain a Business Tax Receipt?
Anyone operating a business in Palm Beach County that provides merchandise or services to the public, even through a one-person company or home-based occupation.

What are the requirements for obtaining a business tax receipt?

  1. Completed Palm Beach County Business Tax Receipt Application.
  2. Zoning approval. Business locations must meet zoning requirements. Zoning approval is evidenced by a signature from a Zoning Official on the front of the business tax receipt application. If your business is located inside municipal (city) limits, you must submit the application in person for zoning approval. To access a list of municipalities, visit the Palm Beach County League of Cities website: www.leagueofcities.com. For commercial businesses located in unincorporated Palm Beach County, contact the Palm Beach County Planning, Building and Zoning Division, 2300 N. Jog Road, West Palm Beach (561) 233- 5200 or 2976 State Road #15, Belle Glade (561) 996-1650. Certain home-based businesses in the unincorporated area of the county may be exempt from this procedure.
  3. Provide proof of Fictitious Name Registration.
  4. Provide proof of documentation if required by state, county or federal agencies. (Special requirements for certain occupations are located on the second page of the Business Tax Receipt Application.)
  5. Fees are unique to the type of business and may be based on variables. (For example: number of employees, restaurant seating, etc.) To ensure that you are paying the correct amount, call the office at 561-355-2272.

Will I be required to have more than one county business receipt for my business?
Some businesses are required to obtain more than one receipt. (Example: a receipt for each professional and a receipt for the business.)

What’s a Fictitious Name Registration?
Businesses doing business in a name other than their own personal name (first and last) or incorporated names, must provide proof of registration prior to obtaining the receipt. Fictitious Name Registration Packets may be picked up at any Tax Collector location or may be filed online at www.sunbiz.org

If I already have a city business tax receipt, do I need to apply for a county receipt as well?
The county receipt will be in addition to any receipt issued by a city.

Are there any business tax exemptions?
You may be eligible for an exempt receipt if you are disabled (a physician’s certificate must accompany the receipt application), a widow with minor dependents (documentation required) or 65 years of age or older (documentation required) and your capital does not exceed $1,000.00. Disabled war veterans are allowed a discounted receipt with proof of disability. Click here for the applications.
