Welcome to June’s edition of Tax Talk. This month we are sharing information on bills passed during the 2009 Florida Legislative Session, the tax deed application process, foreclosure assistance program, summer employment opportunities, identification requirements for flights and as always - important Tax Collector Office deadlines.

Save Money & Renew for 2 NOW!

This year, Florida’s legislative session ended on May 8, after a one week extension focused on resolving a $6 billion revenue shortfall. To bridge part of the revenue gap, legislators decided to increase motor vehicle fees and drivers’ license fees. Vehicle registration fees will increase between 35% and 60%. All funds resulting from motor vehicle fee increases additional state revenue. Read more>

Tax Deed Application

The Palm Beach County Tax Collector’s Office continues to upgrade our systems to provide convenient alternatives to our clients. Tax certificate holders can now apply for tax deed applications (TDAs) via the internet at https://www.realtda.com. TCO employees will no longer handle TDAs now that the process is online. HOPE Workshop

On June 6, 2009, Representative Maria Sachs, District 86 and the H.O.P.E. taskforce are hosting the fourth H.O.P.E. for Palm Beach County Workshop. H.O.P.E. is a foreclosure assistance group for all residents of Palm Beach County. The workshop includes an all volunteer group of bankers, mortgage lenders, financial experts, legal advisors, short sale specialists, Palm Beach County Tax Collector Anne Gannon, credit counselors, and more to assist distressed residents. Workforce Alliance Program

The Workforce Alliance, Inc. has a summer employment program from July 6 to August 14, 2009 Ideal for college students on summer break, recent high school graduates or any young adult (Aged 18-24) seeking great career opportunities. Workforce Alliance is the recipient of stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) to completely fund the wages of the young adult participants as well as the Worker’s Compensation costs. U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security to mandate TSA program “Secure Flight”

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has mandated that passengers' birth date, sex, and name exactly match exact their state/government issued ID for all air reservations as of May 15, 2009. The new program, called Secure Flight, shifts the responsibility for checking passenger names against "watch lists" from the airlines to the Transportation Security Administration. Read more>
