How is your financial health? Along with spring cleaning, April is a good time to clean up personal finances. Many resources are available to help. The Florida Financial Literacy Council was created to study the financial problems that affect consumers. One of the results of the Council’s efforts is the Florida Saves Campaign. The goal of the Florida Saves campaign is to empower Floridians to reach their financial goals through healthy money management.
In honor of Financial Literacy Month, use the following tips to improve your financial health:
- Bring a brown bag lunch to work rather than eating out. If eating out costs $10.00, and packing a lunch costs $4.00, you can save $120 per month. If you save that money, and it receives a 6% rate of return, you will have over $6,500 in just 4 years.
- Instead of spending the tax rebate the government plans to send, save it, or create an emergency fund, or use it to pay down credit card debt.
- Borrow books rather than purchasing them. Borrowing books and reading magazines at your local library, rather than purchasing reading material, can save you hundreds of dollars a year.
- Save your loose change. Putting aside fifty cents a day over the course of a year will allow you to save nearly 40% of a $500 emergency fund.
