The holiday season is time to celebrate the year’s successes with family and friends. These celebrations are well deserved, but please remember to celebrate responsibly. Last year, 79 people were killed in automobile accidents across the state during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Nearly 37% of those fatal accidents were alcohol related.
Stiff drinks call for stiff penalties if you get behind the wheel. Fines range from $250 to $2,500, and prison sentences range from a few months to up to five years. Additionally, your license could be revoked for at least six months, and possibly up to ten years.
When attending social events this month, be sure to designate a sober driver, or program a taxi service’s phone number into your cell phone before you leave. Additionally, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office promotes a program called “Tow To Go”, which provides a confidential free ride home and tow of a vehicle in order to avoid a potential drunk-driving situation. “Tow To Go” is sponsored by AAA Auto Club South and Budweiser, and has safely removed more than 6,600 potentially drunk drivers from the roads. A call to 1-800-AAA-HELP, will get you and your loved ones home safely.
The Tax Collector’s office sends warmest wishes for a happy and safe holiday season.
